#10: Secret Radiation Experiments on Patients
Stories floated around for decades that the U.S. government had used sick patients as secret test subjects for radiation, injecting some with plutonium without telling them. It seemed too cruel to be true. Then a local newspaper reporter started matching code numbers to names.

Reporter Eileen Welsome named the plutonium patients in 1993, and the government opened its records. They revealed thousands of radiation experiments, including on pregnant women and on boys at a state school who ate radioactive oatmeal. President Clinton formally apologized in 1995, and families got settlements.
