#11: The Guatemala Infection Experiments
Imagine someone claiming that American doctors once traveled to another country and purposely gave people sexual diseases just to study them. Most would call that a sick conspiracy theory. For more than sixty years, almost nobody even suspected it. The proof sat forgotten in an archive.

Historian Susan Reverby stumbled on the papers in 2010 while researching another scandal. They showed U.S. health officials had infected about 1,300 Guatemalan prisoners, soldiers, and mental patients with syphilis and gonorrhea in the late 1940s. President Obama personally apologized to Guatemala’s president.
