#4: The CIA’s Partnership With Mobsters to Kill Castro
The story sounded ridiculous: the CIA teaming up with Mafia bosses to kill Cuba’s leader, Fidel Castro. Newspaper columnists hinted at it in the late 1960s, but it read like a bad movie plot. Why would spies trust gangsters? Congress eventually asked the same question.

Congress got its answer in 1975. The CIA had recruited top mobsters like Sam Giancana and Johnny Roselli and even handed them poison pills for Castro. None of the plots worked. Both gangsters were later murdered, and President Ford banned U.S. plots to assassinate foreign leaders.
