#50: De Beers’ Industrial Diamond Price-Fixing
De Beers, the diamond giant, has long been accused of controlling the world’s diamond supply to keep prices high. For decades, it avoided doing business directly in America because of anti-monopoly laws. In the early 1990s, a fired General Electric executive made a startling claim.

His claim: GE and De Beers had secretly agreed to raise prices on industrial diamonds for drills and saws. Prosecutors charged both in 1994. GE was acquitted, and De Beers refused to show up. A decade later, it pleaded guilty and paid $10 million.
