#51: Theranos’ Deception of Investors
Elizabeth Holmes promised a medical miracle: hundreds of health tests from just a few drops of blood. Investors valued her company at $9 billion, and she became the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. A few scientists and employees doubted the machines actually worked. Holmes demanded total secrecy.

Whistleblowers inside the company went to reporter John Carreyrou, who revealed in 2015 that Theranos’ machines were unreliable and many tests secretly ran on ordinary lab equipment. The company collapsed. Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors and sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
