#55: Satyam’s Fictitious Finances
Satyam was one of India’s biggest tech companies, reporting healthy profits and piles of cash. In late 2008, its founder tried to spend over $1 billion buying firms owned by his own family. Investors revolted, and many began asking where all that cash really was.

They soon found out: it mostly didn’t exist. In January 2009, founder Ramalinga Raju confessed in a letter that he had faked over $1 billion in cash and profits for years, comparing it to riding a tiger he couldn’t safely escape. He was later jailed.
