#56: Wells Fargo’s Fake Accounts
Wells Fargo customers kept finding bank accounts and credit cards they never signed up for, sometimes with surprise fees attached. Employees complained about impossible sales targets, and some who spoke up were fired. The bank blamed a few bad workers. Reporters thought the problem went higher.

The Los Angeles Times dug in first, in 2013, and regulators followed. By 2016, it was clear employees had opened millions of fake accounts to hit targets pushed from the top. The bank fired over 5,000 workers, the CEO resigned, and Wells Fargo eventually paid billions in fines.
