#28: Isaac Hayes
Isaac Hayes made history in 1972 when “Theme from Shaft” won the Oscar for Best Song. He was also a star songwriter who co-wrote “Soul Man.” Famous for his shaved head and gold chains, he drove a gold-trimmed Cadillac. His record label, though, was in deep trouble.
When the label collapsed, Hayes owed millions of dollars to a bank. In 1976, he filed for bankruptcy and lost his home, his belongings, and the rights to his future royalties. Years later, he found a whole new audience as the voice of Chef on South Park.
