Heft, a high school student at the time, submitted his design in 1958 as a class assignment, aiming to create a flag with 50 stars to represent each state in the Union.

Despite the significance of his creation, Heft initially received a grade of B- on the project from his teacher. However, his design caught the attention of the White House, prompting President Dwight D. Eisenhower to select it as the official flag of the United States in 1960.
