A Spin-off Was in the Cards
Given the monumental success of Gunsmoke, which graced our screens for two decades, it was a strategic move by CBS to leverage this popularity. Thus, they introduced ‘Dirty Sally’, a spin-off series led by the talented Jeannette Nolan, aiming to captivate Gunsmoke’s vast audience by offering a fresh yet familiar viewing experience.
Despite its promising start in 1974, ‘Dirty Sally’ failed to capture the audience’s attention in the way CBS had hoped, and its journey was cut short. The series was axed after its initial season didn’t meet network expectations, marking an abrupt end to the potential Gunsmoke extension.
