#5: Miss California, 1949 — Jo-Carroll Dennison
Jo-Carroll Dennison, from Tyler, Texas, represented California when she won Miss America in 1942. A child of circus performers, she spent much of her youth traveling before settling in California. She became the first contestant ever crowned Miss America from that state, combining beauty with a fascinating background.

Dennison’s reign took place during World War II, and she traveled extensively to boost troop morale. Later, she pursued a career in Hollywood and used her platform to advocate for education. Her unusual upbringing and determination set her apart as one of the pageant’s most unique winners.
