20. Collapse of a Freeway Overpass in the Bay Area
Year: 2007
Location: Bay Area, San Francisco, California
Company: CalTrans
Estimated Damage Value: $5.2 million*
In the early hours of April 29, 2007, Oakland commuters were stunned by an overpass collapse, after a tanker carrying 8,600 gallons of gas crashed, sending concrete plummeting and causing $5.2 million in damages.

The incident, where a tanker truck flipped and ignited after losing control, resulted in the driver suffering second degree burns but miraculously surviving. CalTrans predicted extended commutes, as the fire’s intense heat led to the overpass’s failure.
