36. Orange You Glad to Have Me?
About a century ago, a monk in Brazil stumbled upon a special orange with a unique mutation: it had no seeds. This discovery led to the creation of what we now know as navel oranges. Since navel oranges don’t have seeds, they can’t reproduce like regular oranges. Instead, farmers have to use cloning to get new trees.
This means that every navel orange tree you see, and every navel orange you eat, is essentially a genetic copy of that first seedless orange found by the monk. So, even though there are billions of navel oranges out there, they’re all genetically identical, like copies of the same book.
