58. Radioactively Grown Mold
Within the haunting confines of Chernobyl’s cooling tower, a peculiar mold thrives, remarkable for its ability to ‘feed’ on radiation, mirroring the way plants utilize sunlight. This unique organism harnesses radiation for energy, in a process akin to photosynthesis, yet with the stark backdrop of a nuclear disaster site.
While this mold puts radiation to use, it doesn’t neutralize or clean up radioactive contamination. Furthermore, despite its extraordinary capabilities, this mold wouldn’t fare significantly better in a nuclear apocalypse than other plants. It has a threshold for radiation absorption beyond which, like humans, it cannot survive or thrive.
