#9: Iranian Women’s Protests
Photos of women protesting in Tehran in 1979 carried a sharp message: revolution did not mean freedom for everyone in the same way. Seen in newspapers and later in historical retrospectives, the images challenged simple stories of national liberation. Today, they feel newly relevant whenever Iranian women protest state control.

The protests began around International Women’s Day, shortly after the revolution, when women objected to new restrictions and compulsory veiling. The pictures show students, workers, professionals, and mothers in public streets. Their presence revealed an immediate struggle over what the new Islamic Republic would mean for women’s rights and daily life.
