#18: Munich Olympics Opening and Competition Images
Before tragedy overtook the 1972 Munich Olympics, newspapers carried images of athletes, ceremonies, design, and international optimism. These photos showed West Germany trying to present a peaceful, modern identity after the shadow of 1936 Berlin. Today, they are often remembered with sadness because of what followed.

The Munich Games were designed to be open, colorful, and friendly. Organizers wanted a clear contrast with the militarized imagery of the Nazi-era Olympics. The competition images still matter because they show the Games as they were intended to be seen: youthful, global, and hopeful, before the event’s meaning changed.
