Captured by J. R. Eyerman, this dramatic photograph shows a man stranded beneath a railroad bridge over California’s Pit River after a car accident. Clinging to the structure high above rushing water, he waits as rescuers carefully move toward him. The height and danger are instantly clear.

The image earned the Pulitzer Prize for Photography for its gripping sense of peril and timing. It placed viewers right at the edge of the scene, sharing the tension of the rescue. The photograph highlighted bravery under pressure and the fragile line between disaster and survival.
