Thailand holds wonders that seem too strange to be real. Behind its dazzling temples, tropical landscapes, and crowded streets are rituals, celebrations, and hidden places that can leave even experienced travelers speechless.
Some are breathtaking. Others are unsettling. A few completely defy explanation at first glance. Just when you think you understand this remarkable country, another astonishing surprise appears—and the strangest discovery may be waiting where nobody expects to find it.
#1: This Market Folds Away for the Train
Shopping at Maeklong Railway Market comes with one unusual interruption: a train. Stalls sit tightly along the tracks in Samut Songkhram, with vegetables, seafood, and other goods displayed just inches from the railway. When a train approaches, vendors quickly pull back their awnings and clear the way.

Locals call it Talat Rom Hup, or the “folding umbrella market.” Once the train squeezes through, the awnings unfold, the goods return to position, and business continues almost immediately. What looks like chaos to visitors is simply another shopping day in Maeklong.
