Ricky wanted his records to sound like genuine rock and roll, but some older session musicians reportedly treated the new music as little more than a passing fad. Rather than accept that attitude, he began surrounding himself with younger players who understood the sound he wanted.

Guitarist James Burton became the most important addition, joined by bassist James Kirkland, drummer Richie Frost, and pianist Gene Garf. Burton’s sharp, inventive guitar playing soon became one of the most recognizable parts of Ricky’s records. With the right musicians finally behind him, his music was about to become tougher and more distinctive.
