#40: She Opens Dollywood Near Her East Tennessee Hometown in 1986
In May 1986, she opened Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, near the Smoky Mountain region where she grew up. The theme park turned her Appalachian background into a major business venture rooted in music, crafts, family entertainment, and regional pride.
The park also connected her fame directly to local jobs and tourism. Instead of distancing herself from her poor mountain childhood, she built a public brand around it, and Dollywood soon became much more than a celebrity attraction.
