#16: He Contracts Pneumonia and Loses His Voice in 1985
In 1985, while visiting CERN in Geneva, Hawking contracts severe pneumonia. His condition becomes life-threatening, and doctors perform a tracheotomy to save his life. The procedure leaves him permanently unable to speak.

The loss of his natural voice marks a major change in both his personal and professional life. Soon after, engineers provide him with a computer-based communication system. Using a speech synthesizer, he gradually resumes writing, lecturing, and participating in scientific debate through technology.
