Washington, D.C., although not a state, deserves a mention in the United Van Lines list. It climbed five spots from the previous year’s ranking, and while living costs may be relatively high, the job market is thriving, and incomes tend to be above average, as per the U.S. Census Bureau.

Despite its small size at just 68 square miles, D.C. boasts remarkable walkability, with 98% of its residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park, according to Curbed. The city offers diverse sports entertainment and a plethora of museums. However, the transit system leaves much to be desired, and summers can be scorching.
