#34: New Jersey
Jobs Gained: 5.3%
Jobs Lost: 5.8%
New Jersey still creates jobs through health care, pharmaceuticals, logistics, finance, retail, education, and businesses connected to the New York and Philadelphia metro areas. Its location makes it important for shipping, warehousing, and professional work.

But the state is also expensive for companies and workers. High rents, taxes, wages, and operating costs can push some businesses to cut back or move work elsewhere. New Jersey had new jobs coming in, but the losses were clearly stronger here.
