#17: Jersey Joe Walcott
Walcott’s toughness came from persistence and resilience. He fought for years before earning a title shot, facing heartbreak and controversy without giving up. Even when knocked down, he kept coming back smarter and stronger. Walcott’s mental and physical durability defined his long climb to the top of the heavyweight division.

In 1951, Walcott fought Ezzard Charles for the heavyweight championship. After several failed title bids, he finally broke through, knocking Charles out in the seventh round with a devastating left hook. That win symbolized his toughness — refusing to be denied despite years of setbacks and disappointment on the big stage.
