#1: Journalism
Many people choose journalism because they want a career that feels meaningful, fast-moving, and connected to real life. They imagine reporting from the scene, interviewing interesting people, exposing problems, or writing stories that actually matter. For students who love asking questions and chasing the truth, it can sound like a dream career.

The regret often comes later, when the reality is lower pay, shrinking newsroom jobs, unstable freelance work, and intense competition. Journalism was directly named the most-regretted major in ZipRecruiter’s 2022 survey, which makes sense when graduates realize passion alone does not always protect them from a difficult media job market.
