#45: A Thread of History
There are some family heirlooms that inevitably leave a family, moving on to live in someone else’s home. This walnut cupboard from the late 1800s is such a family heirloom. An older woman in the neighborhood set this vintage cupboard out on the curb. The person who took this photo happened to be walking by and stopped to ask about the piece of furniture.
The older woman shared that the cupboard belonged to her great-grandmother, who used it to store and sell thread in a general store many decades ago. The drawers are quite small, but the piece was passed down and eventually stored children’s artwork. The base was crooked, and the woman no longer used it, so she set it out on the curb for free. Naturally, the person walking by took it home with them. How could they not?
