Ptolemy XIV died in 44 BCE, not long after Cleopatra returned from Rome. Ancient writers later accused her of poisoning him, although no surviving evidence proves how he died.

His death removed the last brother standing between Cleopatra and complete control. She now had the freedom to choose a new partner for the throne, and the person she selected was only a small child.
