The full explanation was surprisingly simple.

The serval had not been trying to enter a home or find a new owner. It was wet, frightened and looking for a quiet place away from the storm.

Leah’s garage had been partly open while she carried groceries inside.

The serval slipped in unnoticed and hid behind the shelf. Once there, it found dry towels, water and food.

So it stayed.
