It’s already tough to imagine the situation of an adult in prison, but thinking about a kid inside that place is even more heart-wrenching. In the field of youth rehabilitation, it’s a sad reality that some young offenders, those with particularly chaotic lives, actually seem to thrive more in custody than in their own homes.
While the idea of children behind bars is never something to be condoned, it sometimes turns out to be the lesser of two evils. The structured, albeit confined, correctional facility environment can paradoxically offer them a sense of stability and growth, as surprising as it can be.
